You got Peanut Butter in my Whoppers!

Monday, February 11th, 2008

I’ve always been a big fan of Whoppers. No, not the flame broiled mega-burger (believe it or not, I have never even tried one). The Whoppers I am talking about are the milk chocolate malted candy. I don’t know why, but when I was growing up Whoppers were almost always a holiday candy, targeted primarily for Easter or Christmas. Valentine’s Day had it’s Cinnamon Imperials and Conversation Hearts, Easter had Peeps and Cadbury Eggs (and Whoppers), Halloween had it’s Candy Corn, and Christmas had gold coins and…Whoppers.

So it was with great excitement that I spied a new flavor of malted goodness in my grocery checkout line, located conveniently in the “impulse buy” section with the various useless detritus that Wal-Mart has decided that we can’t live without: a new Reese’s Peanut Butter flavor. I quickly added it to my pile of foodstuffs and checked out.

Reese's Whoppers Box

The packaging is perfect for a new trial flavor of Whoppers, and it keeps the traditional ‘milk carton’ shape and functionality of Whoppers. When I opened the carton, I was surprised to find that the Whoppers were fill size, not tiny versions of their milk chocolate counterparts. This pleased me since I was not looking forward to eating ‘small Whoppers’. Just dealing with that oxymoron would have taken away from the experience. However, they were a little tough to remove from the carton, and I ended up tearing the top open to access the candy nestled inside.

Reese's Whoppers Candy

Being a big fan of both Reese’s Pieces and Whoppers, I anticipated a flavor explosion that would cause me to soar to new heights of candy ecstasy. In reality, they are not amazing…just pretty good. The peanut butter is a nice flavor, and you can certainly taste the trademark Reese’s goodness. However, the peanut butter doesn’t mix with the malt flavor in the center as well as milk chocolate. As with traditional Whoppers, if you eat too many you start to “feel the burn” of having too much malted goodness. The unmistakable flavor experience that is ‘malt’ is certainly not for everybody. However, if you are a Whoppers or a peanut butter junkie, I heartily recommend this treat.
